Our Story
We are building the redaction tool law firms deserve
RedactLaw was founded by a team that watched attorneys struggle with tools that were never designed for legal work. We saw paralegals spending entire days dragging black boxes over sensitive data, one page at a time. We knew there had to be a better way — so we built it.
Why RedactLaw exists
Every redaction tool on the market was built for graphic designers, then retrofitted for legal use. Adobe Acrobat's redaction feature is buried five menus deep. Standalone tools charge per page and still require manual review of every single hit. None of them understand what a HIPAA identifier is or why FRCP 5.2 matters.
The consequences of getting redaction wrong are not theoretical. In the Manafort case, prosecutors filed a document with redacted text that could still be copied and pasted from the PDF — exposing classified intelligence to the public. It was not a malicious act. It was a tool failure.
We started RedactLaw to solve this problem once and for all: a redaction platform built from the ground up for attorneys, by people who understand what is at stake when sensitive data leaks.
The problem we saw
- Existing tools were built for designers, not lawyers
- Manual redaction tops out at 25 documents per hour
- Most tools overlay black boxes but leave the underlying text intact
- No built-in support for HIPAA, FRCP 5.2, or FOIA requirements
- Audit trails are an afterthought, not a core feature
What we stand for
These principles guide every decision we make — from product features to infrastructure choices.
Security First
Every architectural decision starts with the question: does this protect our users' data? We encrypt at rest and in transit, never train on your documents, and keep all processing on US-based infrastructure.
Lawyer-Centric Design
We do not bolt legal features onto a generic tool. Every workflow, template, and interface element is designed for the way attorneys and paralegals actually work.
Simplicity
Redaction should not require a training session. If a first-year associate cannot figure it out in under five minutes, we have not done our job.
Transparency
We publish our security practices, explain exactly how our AI works, and give you a full audit trail for every redaction. No black boxes — except the ones on your documents.
Built by a team of legal tech and security engineers
Our team combines deep experience in legal technology, enterprise security, and AI. We have worked at law firms, legal tech companies, and the kind of places where data security is not optional.
